Emily Dickinson
Emily Dickinson (1830-86), US poet. The daughter of a lawyer, she spent most of her life in seclusion with her Calvinist family in Amherst, Massachusetts. She wrote over 1700 poems, most of which are short visionary lyrics on themes of love, death, religion, and the natural world. Her style is intense and highly idiosyncratic. Although she only published a handful of poems in her lifetime, she is now regarded as one of the greatest US writers. She also wrote numerous letters.
