Gaytri Devi
Gaytri Devi, 1919- , political worker and former maharani of Jaipur. Daughter of a maharaja of Cooch Behar, she was married to Swai Man Singh, the former maharaja of Jaipur, and diplomat. She later became an active political worker and won the election to Lok Sabha in 1962 with a record number of votes. She was very prominent in opposition to the ruling Congress Party, and the then prime minister, Indira Gandhi. She was arrested during emergency on 24 July 1975, but was paroled on 9 January 1976. She later completely withdrew from politics. Enormous hoarded wealth was reported to have been found in her palaces at Jaipur, during a police raid in 1976.
