Margot Fonteyn

Margot Fonteyn (1919-91), British ballerina. Born Margaret Hookham, she made her debut in 1934, becoming a leading dancer in classical roles at the Sadler’s Wells Ballet. She also performed in many contemporary ballets by the British choreographer Frederick Ashton, eventually becoming prima ballerina of the Royal Ballet. In the 1960s she danced frequently with Rudolf Nureyev; their partnership in such classics as Giselle is considered one of the most memorable in the history of ballet. She married Roberto Arias, Panamanian ambassador to Britain, in 1955. She later retired to Panama to look after his health:
