Judy Garland
Judy Garland (1922-69), US singer and film actress. Born Frances Gumm, she first appeared on stage when she was three years old and made her first film when she was 14. Her fame as a juvenile star was assured with her performance as the farm girl Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (1939), in which she sang her famous song, `Over the Rainbow’. She subsequently appeared in a number of musical films, including Meet Me in St Louis (1944) and Easter Parade (1948). Despite problems with alcohol and drugs in her later years, she continued to mike films and give highly successful concerts before devoted audiences. Her daughter, Liza Minnelli (1946- ), is also a film actress and singer, perhaps best known for her award-winning performance in the musical film Cabaret (1972).
