Meera Bai
Meera Bai, d. ca. 1564, poet-saint of Rajasthan. One of the most celebrated women-saints of India, and a great exponent of the mystic school of Hindi poetry, she according to modern authorities, was born either towards the end of the 1 5th century or the early 16th century. She was the daughter of Raja Ratan Singh, and was married in about 1516 to Bhojraj, the son of Rana Sanga of Mewar. Her early married life was quite happy, but after the death of her life, she was badly treated by her brother-in-law, because of tier spiritual views and for consorting with holy men. She sought shelter with her father, but left her father took to lead an ascetic life of a religious devotee, undettered by any criticism. She Tent some years at Mathura and Brindavan in the company of saints and holy men, returning to Dwarka, in Gujarat, to pay, the last years of her life. She mostly wrote in Brijbhasha on the life and loves of Krishna. Many of the bhajans (`devotional song,’) composed by her are sung to this day. She is also the reputed author of Rag-Govind and a commentary on Gita Govind of the Sanskrit poet, Jayadeva.
Many legends have grown around her, though the details of her personal life are obscure. Tod is of the view that Meera was the queen of Rana Kumbha of Mewar, to whom she was married in 1413.
