Munshi

Munshi (1926) who was a widower. Both husband and wife co-operated in political and social work. Lilavati, who had started taking interest in public life since 1920, actively participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement and was arrested in 1930, 1932 and again in 1940. She was also deeply involved in social work, and in the uplift of harijans, and women’s welfare. She was the president of Harijan Sevak Sangh from 1943 to 1952, and of the Istri Seva Sangh from 1948 to 1966. She was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1952 to 1958. She also organized Annapurna cafeterias to provide cheap meals, and established the first college of catering in India. She has written many books in Gujrati, including a historical play Kumar Devi.
