Panna
Panna, 1528-40, Rajput nurse. She was a nurse of Udai Singh, the posthumous child of Rana Sanga (d. 1528). His cousin, Banbir Singh, who had murdered his brother, Vikramajit (1530 also wanted to do away with the infant child as he was the rightful claimant. Panna, informed of the evil design, sent away the child out of the fort hidden in a fruit basket, and placed her own son in the cradle. When Banbir Singh burst into the room and asked about Udai Singh, she pointed to the cradle where her own child lay, who was immediately murdered by Banbir Singh. She later escaped to the place where the infant Udai Singh lay hidden and took him to Kumbhalmer, where she persuaded the Jaina governor to take him under his case. She also enlisted many supporters for his cause and Udai Singh was later able to depose the usurper (1540).
