Fritz Lang

Fritz Lang, (1890-1976). German film director, a pioneer of expressionism in the cinema. Among the outstanding films he made in Germany are Metropolis (1926), a terrifying picture of a futuristic slave state, and M (1931), the portrait of a child-murderer (played by Peter Lorre). Having attacked the Nazis in The Testament of Dr Mabuse (1932), he fled Germany after Hitler came to power. He worked in Hollywood from 1936 until 1958 and directed numerous films, mainly thrillers, including Western Union (1941), The Ministry of Fear (1944), and The Big Heat (1953).
