Joseph Lister

Joseph Lister, (1827-1912). British surgeon. Making use of Louis Pasteur’s discovery that infections could be caused by germs carried in the air, he founded antiseptic surgery in 1865 by sterilizing wounds and surgical instruments with carbolic acid. He thereby reduced the deaths after amputation in his Glasgow hospital by two thirds. His methods were very soon adopted elsewhere.
