Edvard Munch
Edvard Munch, (1863-1944). Norwegian expressionist painter. Mainly self-taught as an artist, Munch travelled to Paris as a young man, where he came under the influence of Gauguin and Van Gogh. He adopted the powerful expressionist style of his mature works during a subsequent stay in Berlin. With their morbid subject matter, distorted forms, and use of primary colours, these works had a major influence on German art in the early 20th century. His most famous work is the anguished The Scream (1893). In 1910 he returned to settle in Norway, where he painted the murals for the festival hall in Oslo University (1913).
