Rembrandt
Rembrandt, full name Rembrandt Harmensz van Ryn (1606-69). Dutch painter. He established himself as a portrait painter with a picture of a group of surgeons called The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Tulp (1632). Through painting many portraits and other pictures to com-mission, Rembrandt grew rich, but his lavish life-style led to his bankruptcy in 1656. His many self-portraits and pictures of his wife Saskia are particularly famous for their psychological depth and subtlety of expression. His other works include Night Watch (1642) and The Good Samaritan.
