Dr Benjamin Spock
Dr Benjamin Spock, (1903- ). US paediatrician. After World War II he became known to millions through his Book o f Baby and Child Care (1945), which advocated a generally permissive approach. Several generations of parents have considered him an authority on the psychological and physical bringing-up of children. During the Vietnam War he was convicted, but aquitted on appeal, of persuading men to evade conscription. Later publications include Spock on Spock (1989).
