Meryl Streep
Meryl Streep, real name Mary Louise Streep (1949- ). US film actress. Born in New Jersey, she studied drama at Vassar College and Yale before going on Broadway. She first attracted attention with a supporting part in The Deer Hunter (1978) and a year later won an Oscar for her performance in the divorce drama Kramer vs. Kramer (1979). She went on to play the leads in such distinguished films as The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1981), Sophie’s Choice (1982), Out of Africa (1985), and A Cry in the Dark (1989). After several less successful movies, she made a comeback in the action film The River Wild (1994) and The Bridges of Madison County (1995), with Clint Eastwood. She is particularly well known for her mastery of foreign accents.
