Orson Welles
Orson Welles, (1915-85). US film director, writer, and actor. He became famous for his radio adaptation of H. G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds (1938), which was so realistic that it caused many panic-stricken listeners to flee from what they thought was a Martian invasion. In 1940 Welles went to Hollywood, where he co-wrote, directed, and starred in his masterpiece, Citizen Kane (1941). His later films as a director include The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), Touch of Evil (1958), and Chimes at Midnight (1966), one of several Shakespeare adaptations. He also starred as Harry Lime in The Third Man (1949).
