You were at the MRT station with your friend. While waiting for the train to arrive, you saw a boy playing.
It was a lovely Monday afternoon and I was on my way to meet Jane. We were going for our Yoga class, something which we both enjoy. We agreed to meet at the MRT station.
On the platform, we began discussing about what we had learnt the previous week. Our conversation was interrupted by a loud humming. We turned and saw a bubbly boy skipping down the platform towards them, swinging his water bottle as he skipped.
“Cute boy, isn’t it?” Jane asked. The next instance, both Jane and I were shocked when we saw the water bottle being flung out of the boy’s hand and it landed onto the track. What appalled us next was when the little boy began climbing down to the track!
“Oh my God!” | exclaimed as I brought my hand to my mouth. Both of us were momentarily shocked as the little boy landed on the track. We were not prepared for what happened next. The train was approaching!
“Get out!” I screamed when I found my voice. A shiver ran down my spine. My mind was thrown into a state of confusion. Fear engulfed me as the loud blaring of horns filled the station. The driver of the train had sounded the horn to warn the boy and the screeching of brakes could be heard. The next few seconds were probably the most agonizing for the two of us who were still rooted to the ground, wide-eyed in horror.
The boy who was also taken by surprise could not do anything. Blood was drained from his face and he probably thought the train could stop in time. Unfortunately, the train came and hit him. The impact was so great that he was flung a few metres before landing on the track.
My stomach churned with disgust while Jane sank onto a nearby bench. The station master and his assistant ran up to the platform and upon seeing the gruesome sight, summoned for the police.
Meanwhile, commuters on the train tried to peer out of the glass doors and windows to catch a glimpse of what had happened. Many looked puzzled as they were unable to see what was happening. Iedged forward and there on the track was the boy lying motionlessly. Morbid thoughts filled my mind. I guessed the boy would not be able to survive the hit.
The next moment, the platform was filled with men in blue and paramedics. The boy was pronounced dead on the spot. After the body had been conveyed to the hospital mortuary, police officers cordoned off the area and slowly, they opened the doors to let the passengers get off. There was a sudden increase in noise as curious and frustrated passengers alighted. An announcement was made to the passengers. It was regarding a free shuttle service that would take them to the next station to carry on with their journey.
We were questioned by the police officers. After the questioning, both of us got out of the station. We were so affected by the entire incident that we decided that we would not attend the Yoga lesson that day.
