History is the essence of innumerable biographies
The statement expresses the philosophical view of history. Carlyle was the greatest advocate of this school. He deprecated the practice of chronicling wars, dispositions and accession of kings and queens. That was no good for the succeeding generations. History can be a profitable study only when it inspires. The deeds of great heroes and heroines not only inform but also inspire and elevate the reader. This view has prevailed in modern times, and we get accounts of people who played their part in the advancement of culture and civilization. Persons, more than events, fill proper histories. Even in the traditional writing, it is the actors who catch the attention of the reader. Therefore, it is perfectly right to regard history as the essence of the biographies.
