It is better to light one little candle than to curse the darkness
Few will deny that the world is full of all kinds of evils and hardships. There are a good many things which need reform and change. There is poverty and disease, social and economic exploitation, injustice and cruelty, ingratitude and deception, war and bloodshed. Any careful observer will be filled with dismay and disgust at the numerous ills that are flashed in his mind, and he does not approve of them. But, is criticism the only duty of man? Surely not. Criticism is only half the job and that too the lesser half. It is easier to criticise than to construct. One can pick holes more quickly than give constructive suggestions. And yet what the world and humanity require is constructive work. One may not be able to remove all the ills of the world yet if one tries to remove even an iota of them, one renders a great service to one’s fellow beings. His work is not negative but positive. He does not merely pull a long face at the miseries of humanity but like a sensible person, strives to mitigate them as much as it lies in his power. It is people of this type who eventually inspire others to serve humanity as best as they can without being overawed by the gigantic proportions of the task. Surely, then, it is better to light one little candle than to curse the darkness.
