The paths of glory lead but to the grave
The man and woman may be promising, and they may attain success in youth, but that cannot entitle them to be called successful and happy. Some of the greatest conquerors came to grief in the end. Napoleon’s case is in point. For a time, he was in his full glory. People trembled at the sound of his name. He would not put any limit upon his ambition. The battle of Waterloo sealed his paths of glory. He was not only vanquished but taken prisoner and he spent the last few years in solitude. What a miserable end to a glorious career. All the thrills of the former stages were converted into bitter regrets. Joan of Arc is another instance. She was both a saint and a soldier. She led armies to success. But the gods became jealous. She was taken prisoner, tried for sorcery, and burnt alive. The memory of Rani Laxmi Bai of Jhansi comes into mind irresistibly. She was the very picture of beauty, grace, boldness, chivalry and, above all, an angel. She died while fighting. So, what is said above is more than sufficient to establish that the paths of glory lead but to the grave.
