A Street Accident
I must have got up on the wrong side of my bed that day. Quite early in the day I cut my finger with a blade. This was a bad sign Soon after, I broke a glass. But the worst was to come late in the evening when I went a cycling on the road. I was going very fast. Perhaps, it was that the accident took place.
I do not exactly remember but something went wrong with the horse of a tonga which was coming behind me. The horse leapt up and ran straight at me. I escaped being run over by a skilful piece of cycling. But, the hub of the tonga collided against my pedal and I was thrown down sharply from my cycle. Just then, a motor car came speedily from the opposite direction. There were roughly ten yards between me and death. The driver applied the brakes fast and the car stopped atonce just before me. At that time I was so nervous I could hardly move even to save myself.
The horse became more unruly when the car stopped. I took a leap with the tonga and the load of passengers and of its hoofs landed at my leg. It made a gashing wound on my thigh. I lay senseless. Some gentlemen helped me to be removed to the hospital. The tonga-wallah was put under arrest. The driver of the car was no other than my uncle. He took care of me and’ my cycle which was not much damaged.
I remained in the hospital for a week. I still remember everything. The day was certainly very bad for me.
