Formalities of Marriages
Before marriage is actually performed there are certain formalities which must be completed. As already said a proposal for a marriage can be made in the presence of male and female relations of the parties to the marriage. Witness should also be present at the time when proposal is made.
It is essential that the proposal must be accepted at the same meeting. After both the parties have agreed to the proposal a Maulvi recites certain verses from Holy Quam. After it marriage is supposed to have taken place Other formalities including that of Nikah follow in the wake.
Thus marriage in Islam is both a religious as well as social system. Then are different kinds of marriages among the Muslims, namely Valid marriage, Void marriage and Irregular marriage, about which a mention will follow. After the marriage has however taken place wife is supposed to perform certain duties as well.
