Mudumalai National Park 

Introduction

The Mudumalai National Park and Wild Life Sanctuary is located at the Nilgiri district in Tamil Nadu. It is also a Tiger Reserve.

The park along with sanctuaries and forests extends over an area of 321 sq. km.

Connectivity

Gudalur Town is 16 km away from the Mudumalai National Park. The railway stations at Ooty is around 64 km from the park. Coimbatore is the nearest airport.

Forest

The Mudumalai National Park and Tiger Reserve along with nearby forest consists of tropical deciduous mixed forests with bamboos. It has a varied terrain and an even climate. It is covered with thick green vegetation and tall trees. The trees growing here are rosewood, teak, sandalwood, eucalyptus etc. The entire eco-system is perfect to sustain diverse fauna and avifauna. The region also has areas covered with thick tall grass that are ideal habitat for larger herbivores.

Animals and birds

It is a declared Tiger Reserve. There are 48 tigers. Endangered species of animals such as Bengal Tigers, Indian Elephants, etc are found here. Other animals found here are leopard, pig, chital, gaur, Malabar squirrel, mouse deer etc. The avifauna include barbets, drongos, minivets, cuckoos, hornbills, woodpeckers, owls, hawk eagles, pigeons, parakeet, doves, eagles, peafowls, etc.

Best Period

The suitable period for visiting the National park is between February and May and again between September and November. There are rest houses and lodges for the tourists.
