The Elephant
An elephant is a very large and wise animal. It is huge and has four feet. It has legs which look like pillars. Its skin colour is dark grey.
Its skin is very hard. The elephants are usually found in forests. White elephants are also there. But they are rare.
It has two large fan-like ears. It has a short tail. It has a long and powerful trunk. It is so wonderful that it can pick up even a pin. With its trunk an elephant sucks water and eats its food.
A male elephant has long curved tusks. The tusks are very costly. They are used as ivory for making beautiful things.
It is an intelligent and faithful animal. It is a very useful animal. It helps us carry large wood logs from the jungle. It is used for hunting and riding.
It has a very sharp memory. It never forgets a kindness or unkindness shown to it. Its keeper is called a ‘mahout’. When it walks it looks quite royal. In old times, elephants were used in war.
It lives from 150 to 200 years. It is a costly affair to maintain an elephant. After the death of an elephant, its teeth are used for making ornaments, decoration pieces, and for many other purposes.
Elephants can be seen in a circus doing many tricks. They can also be seen in marriages and religious processions. An elephant trumpets.
