Indira Gandhi
Mrs. Indira Gandhi, our former Prime Minister, was a worthy leader of India. She held this great seat for over sixteen years. During this period, she won name and fame. Not only India but also the world liked and loved her.
Mrs. Indira Gandhi was the daughter of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. She was born on November 19, 1917 at Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh. She received education in India and Switzerland, and at Oxford and Vishwabharti (Shantiniketan). She was married to Feroz Gandhi who died in 1960, leaving her with two sons, Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi.
Mrs. Gandhi was a high-rated politician. She became the member of India National Congress in 1938 and since then she had been active in politics. In January, 1966 after the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri, she became the Prime Minister of India. In 1984 (October 31), she was shot dead by her own security guard.
No doubt, among all the Prime Ministers and also all the leaders, she had her own position. She was admired by all. In political field, in social field, she had her precious part. She was great. She was the third lady in world history to become a Prime Minister. The coming generations can achieve success by following her footsteps.
