Babur vs. Ibrahim Lodi
The first battle of Panipat was something more than a contest between Mughal Emperor Babur and and Afghan King Ibrahim Lodi.
As subsequent events showed the contest was one between two races, the Mughals and Afghans. Both the Mughals under Babur and Afghans under Lodi Sultans were eyeing for control over a large territory in India.
The Lodi Sultans were Afghans and they had ruled in Delhi for about seventy-five years. Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi and overthrew the Afghan rule by his victory at First battle of Panipat in 1526.
Babur was a Chaghatai Turk but the dynasty founded by him in India came to be known as the Mughal dynasty.
But the Afghans, though beaten, were not crushed. There were many powerful Afghan chiefs in different parts of the country, especially in Bengal and Bihar, who were not reconciled to the Mughal predominance.
