Chennai, Visakhapatnam and Paradip are three important ports on the east coast of India.
The Port at Chennai
Chennai port is situated on the eastern coast. Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, etc. are included in its hinterland. Tea, coffee, tobacco, are the chief exports from this port. The imports are similar to those of Kolkata and Bombay. The harbour is entirely an artificial one.
The Port at Visakhapatnam
It is situated on the East Coast of India and it has an excellent harbour, Andhra, Orissa and M.P. are included in its hinterland.
Manganese, mica, timber, oil seeds, hides and skins, etc. are exported. Imports are similar to those of Chennai, it is a naval base.
The port at Paradip
It is situated on the Orissa coast. With a depth of 12 meters it has the deepest harbour in India and it is specially equipped to receive bulk carriers. It exports iron-ore to Japan mainly.
