Anusuya Bai Kale
Anusuya Bai Kale, 1896-1958, freedom fighter and political worker. Daughter of a lawyer, Sadashiv Bhate, she was born in Belgaum, and was married in 1916 to an electrical engineer B. P. Kale, of Nagpur. She was made a member of the Legislative Council of the former Central Provinces in 1928, but resigned in 1930 to join the national movement, and was sentenced for four months. She was elected Deputy Speaker of the Central Provinces Legislative Council in 1937. During the Quit India Movement of August 1942 she worked to save seven Gonds of Chimur and Ashti from gallows. She was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1952 and again in 1907. She was very active in the cause of Indian women, and was closely associated with All India Women’s Conference, at whose session she presided in 1947. She also organized aid and succour for the sufferers during the communal riots following the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.
