Amrita Sher-Gill
Amrita Sher-Gill, d. 1941, artist. One of the most famous of the modern Indian painters, she was born of a Sikh father and a Hungarian mother. She studied painting in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, and was much influenced by Post-Impressionism, particularly by Ganguin and Modigliani. On return to India she developed a completely distinctive style, which was quite a revolt against the prevailing Bengal style. Her life was tragically cut short due to her death at the age of 29. A complete wing at the Museum of Modern Art, Delhi, is devoted to her paintings.
