Anandi Gopal Joshi
Anandi Gopal Joshi, 1865-87, physician. One of the first women of her generation to take up a professional career, she was the daughter of Ganpatrao Joshi, a wealthy landlord of Pune. She was married at the age of nine to Gopal Vinayak Joshi, a clerk in the postal department, who also acted as her teacher. After the death of her only child in 1878, she decided to study medicine, and sailed for America all alone in 1883. She took her degree in 1886 from the Women’s Medical College, Philadelphia. On her return, she was appointed resident physician of the women’s ward in the new Albert Edward Hospital, Kolhapur but she soon contracted tuberclosis and died in 1887.
