Kamala Kaul Nehru
Kamala Kaul Nehru, 1899-1936, social and political worker. Daughter of Jawaharmul Kaul, and his wife Rajpati, of Delhi. she was married to Jawaharlal Nehru on 8 February 1916. Their child Indira, who later became the Prime Minister of India, was born on 19 November 1917 at Allahabad, U.P. Though a woman of weak constitution she was actively associated with her husband in the political affairs of the country and the freedom movement since 1920, giving up a life of luxury to participate in the Satyagraha Movement. She was arrested and jailed on 1 January 1931, and though sentenced to two months, she was released after 26 days. In May 1935 she was taken to Europe for treatment and died at Geneva on 1 March 1936. She was a pioneer of emancipation of Indian women, and worked ceaselessly for the cause of female uplift and the downtrodden.
