Lal Kumari

Lal Kumari, 1713, courtesan and mistress of Emperor Jahandar Shah (1712-13). A dancing girl of low origin, she was given a status higher than even of the queen, and had an allowance of two crores of rupees every year. All her worthless male relations, singers and dancers, were also given high posts at the court. She completely dominated the emperor who spent all his time in drunken revelry and frolics with her, which scandalized the sober. With the approach of the forces of Farrukhsiyar in January 1713, she fled from Delhi with the emperor, but both were captured. While Jahandarshah was executed, she was confined to the asylam for the royal widows called Suhagpura.
