M.S. Subbulakshmi
M.S. Subbulakshmi, 1916- musician. Born in Madurai (Tamil Nadu) she studied classical music under her mother, and started given public recitals since 1928 under her mother and independently prom 1932. Most of her recitals were for the public cause. She also sang at the Edinburgh Festival in 1963, and before the General Assembly of the United Nations in October 1966 at the invitation of U. Thant. She was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1954.
