Sakwar Bai

Sakwar Bai, d. 1749, Mahratha queen. Third of the four -wives of Raja Shahu (d. 1749), she and the younger queen, Saguna Bai, were married to him at Purandar. on his release from Mughal captivity (May 1707). A very ambitious and domineering woman, she refused to accept the legitimacy of Ramaraja as the grandson of Tarabai, and wanted to adopt a boy of her own through which she could rule the state after her husband. She even started collecting an army against the Peshwa and intriguing with Sambhaji of the Kolhapur House. She remained the constant attendant of Raja Sahu in his illness, and would not allow anyone, including the Peshwa, to come near him. But finding all her plans frustrated, she committed sati (15 December 1749). She had a daughter, but no son.
