Sucheta Kriplani

Sucheta Kriplani, 1908-1974, political and social worker. Daughter of S.N. Majumdar, a nationalist medical officer, she was born at Ambala, in Haryana, on 25 June 1908. She had a brilliant educational career and started her life as a teacher. While teaching at Banaras Hindu University she came in contact with Acharya Kriplani whom she married in 1936. She started her active political activities in 1939 and was closely associated with the nationalist movement and with the Indian National Congress. In 1940, she was sentenced to two years ; in August 1942, she went under-ground organizing political activities but was arrested in 1944, at Patna. She was released in 1945, and elected to the Constituent Assembly in 1946, and worked with Mahatma Gandhi during the Noakhali riots for Hindu-Muslim unity. She continued to be a member of the Congress Working Committee even after the resignation of her husband from the Congress president ship. In 1962, she became a minister in the U.P. cabinet, and the chief minister in Octobor 1963. She retired from active politics in 1971, and died on 1 December 1974 She also compiled an autobiography which has been left unfinished.
