Attenborough, Richard, Lord
Attenborough, Richard, Lord (1923- ) British film director, actor, and producer. Attenborough became a star of the British cinema with his appearances in such films as In Which We Serve (1942) and Brighton Rock: (1947). He later moved into film production and made his debut as a director with Oh, What a Lovely War! (1969). In 1982 his biopic Gandhi, a project that he had cherished for some 20 years, earned eight Oscars. Sub-sequent films have included Cry Freedom (1987), Chaplin (1992), and Shadowlands (1993). Attenborough, who was knighted in 1979 and made a baron in 1993, has continued to appear in such films as Jurassic Park (1993) and Miracle on 34th Street (1994). His brother is the naturalist, broadcaster, and maker of wildlife films Sir David Attenborough (1926- ).
