Attila

Attila (406-453 ), King of the Huns, a nomadic central Asian tribe that settled near the Danube. Nick-named the ‘Scourge of God’, Attila claimed sovereignty over all the tribes between the Baltic and the Danube. At the height of his power, Attila’s kingdom extended from the Rhine to the frontiers of China. In 451 he crossed the Rhine and invaded Gaul but was defeated by the Romans and Visigoths. In 452 he raided Italy but ended his invasion at the request of Pope Leo I. He died the following year, on the night of his marriage, and his empire disintegrated.
