Avogadro, Count Amedeo
Avogadro, Count Amedeo (1776-1856). Italian physicist. Avogadro became professor of mathematics at Turin University in 1820. In 1811 he formulated the hypothesis known as Avogadro’s law. This states that equal volumes of gases contain the same number of molecules when temperature and pressure are constant. The number of molecules in one gram molecular weight of any substance is known as Avogadro’s number. His work was neglected in his lifetime but was rediscovered in the 19th century.
