Charles Kingsley

Charles Kingsley, (1819-75). British novelist and poet. At Cambridge he joined the Christian Socialist movement, for whom he wrote essays and pamphlets; his early novels were also concerned with social problems of the period. His better-known novels include Westward Ho! (1855), set in Elizabethan times, and his classic children’s story The Water Babies (1863), which attacks the exploitation of child labour. He was professor of modern history at Cambridge (1860-69) but resigned to become canon of Chester and, later, of Westminster.
