Edward VII
Edward VII (1841-1910), King of Great Britain and Ireland, eldest son of Queen Victoria. After the death of Prince Albert in 1861, Victoria retired from public life for some years and Prince Edward carried out routine royal duties. In 1863 he married Princess Alexandra of Denmark. He travelled to Canada and the US, India, and Egypt. A prominent figure in society and a notorious womanizer, he became extremely popular but was not allowed to play a role in political affairs while Queen Victoria lived. He succeeded to the throne in 1901, at the age of 60.
