El Greco
El Greco real name Domenikos Theotokopoulos (1541-1614). Spanish painter, sculptor, and architect, born in Crete. He worked in Venice, possibly studying under Titian, and Rome, where he was influenced by Michelangelo’s work. In the 1570’s he settled in Toledo, Spain, and was commissioned to design altarpieces. His paintings, mostly of religious subjects, are characterized by elongated figures and the use of brilliant colours. They include Burial of Count Orgaz (1586) and Assumption (1613). His work aroused hostile criticism in his lifetime.
