Fridtjof Nansen

Fridtjof Nansen, (1861-1930). Norwegian polar explorer, scientist, and statesman. He successfully crossed. Greenland in 1888 and five years later set off to explore the Arctic. He reached the North Pole in 1896 by letting his ship Fram drift north in the ice and continuing by dog sled. After his return Nansen became professor of zoology and subsequently oceanography at Oslo University. From 1906 to 1908 he was Norwegian ambassador to London. In 1922 he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his refugee relief work with the League of Nations.
