Friedrich Engels
Friedrich Engels (1820-95), German philosopher: and economist, a co-founder of Marxism. He was a’: member of a left-wing youth group in Berlin and met Karl Marx in 1844. He took an interest in the Conditions of the workers at his father’s cotton mill in Manchester, leading to his first major work, The Condition of the Working Class in England (1845). He collaborated with Marx on such works as The German Ideology (1845) and The Communist Manifesto (1848). They returned to England together after the failure of the 1848 revolution and Engels went back to work at the Manchester mill, supporting the Marx family from his earnings. After Marx’s death, Engels edited and completed the second and third volumes of Das Kapital (1885 and 1894).
