Joe DiMaggio
Joe DiMaggio, full name Joseph Paul DiMaggio (1914- ), US baseball player, considered one of the game’s greatest heroes. Famous for his quiet charisma, he was often nicknamed ‘joltin’ Joe’ or ‘the Yankee Clipper’. DiMaggio, who was born in Martinez, California, began to play minor-league baseball in San Francisco. In the later 1930s he became famous as an outstanding hitter and outfielder with the New York Yankees; the team won nine World Series titles during his 13 seasons on the side (he lost three seasons to World War II). After his retirement in 1951 he worked in public relations and on television. He married the film actress Marilyn Monroe in 1954 but the marriage lasted only nine months. His brothers Vincent DiMaggio and Dominic DiMaggio were also professional base-ball players.
