Joe Namath
Joe Namath, full name Joseph William Namath (1943— ). US American footballer, considered one of the best passers in the history of the sport. Brought up in Beaver Falls, a steel-mill town in Pennsylvania, he played quarterback at the University of Alabama until 1964, when he was recruited by the New York Jets. In 1969 he was briefly obliged to resign from the team owing to the controversy aroused by his ownership of a Broadway nightclub. He continued with the Jets for a further seven seasons, during which he set numerous records for passing the ball. After one season with the Los Angeles Rams he retired in 1978. Namath is also well known to the US public for his appearances in commercials and in acting roles.
