Josephine
Josephine (1763-1814). French empress, born Marie Josephe-Rose Tascher de la Pagerie in Martinique. Widow of the vicomte de Beauharnais, she married Napoleon Bonaparte in 1796 and became empress in 1804. She had two children from her first marriage but was unable to give Napoleon a son. The marriage was annulled in 1810 and she retired to Malmaison near Paris.
