Mark Antony, Latin name Marcus Antonius (c. 82-30 BO. Roman statesman and soldier. He served as a cavalry commander during the reign of Julius Caesar. After Caesar’s assassination he roused the Roman people against Caesar’s republican assassins, Brutus and Cassius, whom he defeated at Philippi (42). As the triumvir (joint ruler) responsible for Rome’s eastern provinces, he became the lover of Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt. He quarrelled with his fellow triumvir Octavian, and joined forces with Cleopatra against him. After their defeat at Actium (31), they fled to Egypt and commit-ted suicide.
