Mickey Mantle, (1931- ). US baseball player, a famous hitter who scored 536 home runs during his career. Having been trained by his father, a semiprofessional player, Mantle was recruited by the New York Yankees in 1951. During his 17 seasons with the team he frequently led the American League tables for runs scored and home runs. Mantle, who could bat powerfully with either arm, often appeared on the pitch heavily bandaged owing to the lasting effects of a youthful bone-tissue disease. After retiring as a player in 1968, he worked as a coach. In 1983 he was barred from working in professional baseball because he had taken a public-relations job with a casino.
