Rudyard Kipling

Rudyard Kipling, (1865-1936). British poet and writer, author of The Jungle Books (1894-95) and Just So Stories (1902) for children and numerous short stories. Kipling was born in Bombay but brought up in England; a number of his works are set in India. He returned to India as a journalist but made his name in Britain with Barrack-Room Ballads (1892). His poetry, much of it written in soldiers’ cockney dialect, won great popularity. However, on the death of Tennyson, Kipling refused the post of Poet Laureate. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1907. His other works include the novel Kim (1901).
