Sergei Prokofiev
Sergei Prokofiev, (1891-1953). Russian composer. Prokofiev began composing at an early age and in 1914 won the Rubinstein Prize with his first piano concerto. From 1914 to 1933 he lived mainly in Europe, where he composed such works as the Classical Symphony (1916-17) and the opera. The Love of Three Oranges (1921). In 1933 he returned to Russia. His most famous works include Peter and the Wolf (1936), the ballets Romeo and Juliet (1935-36) and Cinderella (1940-44), and the opera War and Peace (1941-52), based on Tolstoy’s epic novel.
