Sophocles
Sophocles (c. 496-406 BC). Greek tragic dramatist. Universally popular and successful in his own day, he was treasurer of the Athenian Empire (443-442) and a general of the army. Only seven of his 123 plays survive, the most famous being Antigone (442), Oedipus Rex (c. 430), and Oedipus at Colonus (401).
