Tenzing Norgay
Tenzing Norgay (1914-86). Sherpa mountaineer. He worked as a porter on an expedition to Mount Everest in 1935 and became a head porter in 1947. With Sir Edmund Hillary, he made the first complete ascent of Everest (1953). His autobiography, Tiger of the Snows, appeared in 1955 and he later became director of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling.
